Post Prebug Headlights- Best option for better bulbs/more light?
Hello all,

Being a 3rd shifter, I actually use my headlights and care about how well they work. I've been searching high and low on here and all over the internet. I was hoping I'd be able to find a better/brighter bulb I could replace the stock bulbs with that'd make my prebug light up the night a little better.

I've looked at aftermarket items from BCD, but some folks say their bulbs are from track lighting and not made for weather or vibration. I NEED my lights to work no matter what, so I think the "quad optic" and other replacements might not be my best option. Or are they? Anybody out there have any aftermarket setups they like? I love the way my stock prebug looks, so I'd LIKE to just get better bulbs.

I found these: http://scootertuning.ca/en/lighting/400 ... d-35w.html

Any ideas that keep a mostly stock look and don't require tons of fabrication would be GREATLY appreciated. I just really want to be able to switch to better bulbs and have better lighting, but I've yet to stumble upon any useful info on this yet.

Thanks for any help you can offer!! :patriot:

Corrosion found these to be pretty good. I'll be switching to them myself.

Thanks, Spaz! That's a really great write-ups!

My only concern would be that this thread deals with a bugeye, like my 2009, but I'm wanting something for my 2000 prebug...

Do you know if these bulbs would work for my 2000?

I don't know. Sorry.

Although you could see if the part numbers (bulbs) are the same between the two??

My service manual only states that the bulbs for my 2000 are: "12V 25W/25 W x 2" That's exactly how it's written in the manual.

Are these the same bulbs as the bugeye?

Looks to be completely different. Like your bulbs are, part of/built into, the lens??

Thanks for pointing that out with the schematics. I did the dual headlight mod on my '09, so I remember what the bulbs looked like, but I've never had the front off my prebug to see them. I figured there'd be a ton of folks who've replaced the prebug's bulbs with something more adequate!

Man, I hope I can get some better lights though! I'm crafty, but when it comes the electrical, I might as well be reading braile...

Lights are simple though... two to three wires. One ground. one positive. and another positive if you have high beams. Easy peasy :)

If the headlights are sealed units, then you won't be able to replace the bulbs alone. But you could modify them so they could accept H4-style bulbs. I'm planning on doing exactly that with my Jog headlight: cut out the old bulb area, cut out the bulb area off a broken bugeye headlight assembly, then epoxy it on the Jog headlight.

Those halogen bulbs like the ones you linked SUCKS for lights. They're house units with no focus whatsoever. They throw light around... and that's about it really.
