The Next R is a good pipe for bang for the buck .
Mid to High 9's is where it revs too .
Power band is 8000 to 9000 rpm.
You will need clutch springs since the power band moves up a couple thousand rpm .
Just Stay away from the mid race stuff that is harder to set up and all that stuff is designed to run above 10,000 rpm

Post Re: 2004 Zuma 52 mph Daily Driver
Had to order some contra springs and new clutch the stock contra has some belt slip.
Malossi Delta Clutch on its way .
Malossi Over Range is on the christmas list .
Also ordered Dr Pulley Sliders want to see if the hype is worth it .
Per the guidelines on here you run 1 gram higher than rollers .
I ordered 5 gram and 6 gram sliders .
Since the gears and pipe seem to like roller weights around 5 grams

Zuma run to night
Played with shims to increase belt travel just over 3mm of marker left.
5.1 grams rollers 9200 rpms 53 mph
Tried 6 gram sliders . 9100 rpms is where they peaked out 52 mph .
I did not notice any extra belt travel acceleration was similar.
I am going to add weight with aluminum foil to each slider one and see what that does .
They definetely act lighter than they are .

Did you remove the shim to gain more belt travel? I know that if I remove mine I can get my 8mm mark down to 6mm but the bottom end acceleration is so bad.

I have shim kits they are a bunch of different sizes.
Bought them at scootertuning they were like 3 bucks for bunch of them i just added them to one of my orders .
It is a trade off bottom end for top end when you get to the edges of your tuning range .
I find get the rollers close to the acceleration and belt travel I like and then go a shim smaller and larger and see if there is improvement.

Post Re: 2004 Zuma 54 mph Daily Driver
Multiple runs today 4 different directions to cancel out effect of 3 mph winds
53.2 miles against wind 55.6 with wind 54.2 crosswinds both ways .
So will call it a 54 mph build .
6 gram slider is what I settled on For now 6 gram slider acted close to 5.2 gram rollers same shim the sliders moved the belt travel 1/2 a mm.
The sliders do have a higher rpm on acceleration 8700 to 8500 vs the 5.2 and end at the same peak rpm they cruise at a slightly lower rpm .
I would put them as a last priority upgrade or skip altogether because of the mild results for the cost.
Have not done timed runs for acceleration but does not seem like a noticeable difference .
Belt travel is just under 3mm .

Post Re: 2004 Zuma 54 mph Daily Driver
The 11 to 1 gear ratio from 14.66
Equals 7-8 mph on my set up with the variator belt travel under 3mm and same rpm range .
Before gears 45-46 after gears 53-54 mph .
rpms before gears and mph
9200rpm 46mph,8800 42mph, 7800 37 mph
With Gears
9200 rpm 54 mph ,9000 51 mph,7900 41mph ,7500 35 mph ,7000 30 mph

After install of gears peak rpms have come down a few hunderd rpms
With the next r on stock cylinder I pushed high 9s now I push low 9s
Before gears stock pipe and kit I pushed low 9s after gears I pushed high 8s
This might be the wind resistance since I am running 7 mph faster at the same rpm

56 mph is the new high
Hit 57.5 mph with a 2 mph wind and 55.5 against the same wind.

Dr pulley sliders set at 5.5 grams to 5 grams are really close to perfect .
Put a little thicker shim in to get belt travel below 3mm

6.5 gram sliders too heavy peak rpms would not go over 9000 53 mph
6 grams slider on the heavy side peak rpms 9100 54 mph
5.5 gram peak rpms 9400 mashed throttle 8800 56 mph
5 grams peak rpm 9600 mashed throttle 9100 55 mph

Going to stick with the 5.5 grams for now the 5 gram have to run a acceleration run to decided between those 2

Almost reaching the 60mph club. I reckon once you get the over range kit you'll be able to hit 60 and maintain it easily.

Post Re: 2004 Zuma 56 mph Daily Driver
Last nights run did surprise me .
It was first time I had less than 2mph winds
Multiple times in all kind of directions with against and cross winds i was always over 55 mph
I threw a 55 mph goal just to see if I could do it .

I am now a advocate for sliders they did add a mph, They do shift different so you do have to run about 10-15% heavier .

I actually do have a malossi oversized variator on my shelf that I could try to see what that does .
It is the front half of the full over range .
A over range is about 5% bigger than the Polini I have so i would only expect 2-4 mph.
the Polini variator was about a 2mph upgrade.

I have new tires to put on next Michelin Boppers .
Have to see what those do.
I am leaning to work on getting more launch over top speed at this point .
I have a malossi clutch coming any day now to dial in

Are you using longer belts to get the a higher travel on the variator?

Also one question that is completely unrelated is how long do you idle your scooter from a cold start or how do you go about warming up the engine everytime? and does a cold start mean starting in cold weather conditions or just a cold engine.

Genuine yamaha belts .
If i go overrange I will be forced to buy malossi belts
I have the auto choke and or a tach on every scoot .
I just wait for rpms to drop back
Without a tach
I start it the tire spins fast because the rpms are high when it stops spinning fast i take off.
Cold start is starting a scoot that hasnt been running in the last couple hours so the engine is cold .

Thanks for the info.
Is it wierd that I can cold start with 1/2 to no choke. If I go more than 1/2 choke it just bogs and dies; even on cold starts.

Your idle may still be too rich
Try turning the mixture screw 1/2 turn leaner and then try to use more than a 1/2 choke and see if it starts .
The choke on the bug eyes is actually a enricher which means it adds fuel instead of choking air like a conventional choke .
You only need the choke when you do your first cold start after that the scoot doesnt have to be that warm to kick over .
My beamer has the on off choke like the prebug and i only use it to start and then turn it off .

I have done that and it is a bit better. I do not mind it as I just checked my plug and it is a nice tan color. I think I am fully tuned but I am thinking of just one more upgrade which is the pipe. Can I also ask what contra, clutch springs you had to put in to get a good setup for the next-r? It's just so I can buy everything at once at scooter tuning instead of having to buy the springs and all that stuff later on and spending extra on shipping.
