Post Remove spacer in variator to derestrict? Bad idea?
I ran across this Youtube video which details removing a washer or spacer from the variator to derestrict a 50cc moped. Does this even apply to the Zuma? Does it work or is it a bad idea?

the restrictors are where the rollers are, not the washer
but there isnt any on the zuma

leave all the washers you find in a zuma there

there is no wedding band in a zuma the wahser that you see there are actualy shims to keep your belt running true

either way 50 or 125 do not remove your shims if your varatior isnt shimed right you will eat belts left and right

I have done that to all 3 of mine and have had zero problems. I just put the washer in behind the variator to line things back up. Mine are not the wedding bands either. Gained an average of 4 mph on each of them.

Look at it this way, you have seen the shims that Stage 6 sells and many use to tune the variator. It does the same thing only in reverse.

that may be the advantage to a short case engine
a fraction of a mm has a greater effect the longer things are

I think you are mistaken on this, so we will have to agree to disagree. But I bet nearly every big name race team and super tuner uses those variator shims to adjust where the belt rides on the variator to tune it, and when you open it up, it can only be shimmed one way. I doubt they would do that if its a bad thing.

I think the normal use is 1-2 shims until you find the correct thickness, then you try to find 1 shim the right size. Its for tuning, just like the tuning rollers. Use them to find what you need then install the correct one
the reason they sell a whole bunch in a box is they probably cost 1/2 cent each and its easier to sell a box full for $25 then 1 at a time

Sure... i didnt mean that you put them all in there! But the point is, you use them to shim it to where it needs to be and there shouldnt be any damage from it. The stock washer is .838mm and wouldnt be enough to kill a belt.

This argument agani? I still am curious to try the washer behind the variator trick.

Its only a 10 minute job, go try it out and let us know what it does for a Zuma.

Incorrect. They are for pefect belt alignment. Short case engine it might not make a difference but on a long case Zuma motor the belt will shred to pieces if the alignment is a sixteenth out of whack.

Besides that...if you "tune" a variator so the belt will ride higher....you also have to "tune" the clutch an equal amount. Belt alignment must be right on both ends.

To the original poster...leave all shims and washers alone. They are there for a reason.

On my current zuma 50 project when I removed the variator the shims weren't there. The previous owner must've lost them.
I ordered two new OEM ones. I'm curious how to measure or align the belt? I guess tech some people could need one washer while another might need three.

I have a 2012 50F.
I took the washer out and did notice about 3-4MPH better top speed... but did not like what it did to the low end. It made the bike sluggish on take off from start, so I put the washer back after about a week or so.

I drive in heavy traffic most of the time, so top speed is not as important to me as having the torque on the low end.

hope this helps.
