Post Air Cooling / Modification / STR-8 Fan
Increased cooling efficency and performance:

First off, It worked for me. It cost me some RPM & Top speed. It is a trade off. IMO a good one.
lower operating temperatures, should increase performance. I would also like to think it would increases engine life & reliability .

Before you start this. you should should read up on the subject. then ask your self, is it Snake Oil, Hooter Buff, WTM,(waste of time and money) You make the call. It worked for Me, here is How & What I did.

There are 2 design,s or methodology's I found, you can follow.

Design 1, Mod the existing air cooling shrouds & fan and fan housing. Add an Air Scoop.
Design 2, Utilize BWs-100's design, bigger housing & cylinder shroud and fan.

I preferred choice #1:
Mod the existing Housing, over the BWS-100 method. (I did not like the Cylinder Shroud / Fan Housing fit, of the BWS-100.

I used a STR-8 fan & air scoop

That was my issue - I don't want to give up RPM and top speed! To me those *are* performance. :)

By the way, just getting rid of the stock air scoop gained me about 15 degrees of cooling. (That's with the stock fan.)

Opening up the grill on the OE helps too.

I'm looking into doing this as well... what did you use to cut off the raised lip on the outside of the cover (where the scoop is)? Dremel?

Did not cut it, used a 5" grinding disc 60 grit. Used for Autobody. Took it down in less than a minute.

I used a dremel, but it wasn't very easy going. Slower and is gonna take some effort to clean up. Did you screw the scoop into the shroud or use some sort of adhesive?

Post Re: Air Cooling / Modification / STR-8 Fan
I hate to say it, but the STR-8 fan can blow me. :)

My temps are fine with the stock one, and I want all the performance I can get.

But the best tool to shave the STR-8 fan is a belt sander upside down.

That will cut it down. But it won't allow you round over the corner like a grinder & rotating fan. The whole procedure might take 15 minutes. Plus you need it on the motor to do your check fit. But if you don't have a grinder & you have a belt sander it would be the same operation. You just have to, Use some PPE & be careful, And helps too have some skill at this type of thing.

Can't help you there. :)

My issue is just that the fan uses too much power. I don't need that.

Post Re: Air Cooling / Modification / STR-8 Fan
That is why you trim it down to the smallest version that cool's the cylinder. Particularly with Iron kits. The alloy kits shed heat through there better metallurgical property's. You are looking to increase flow across the fins. Increased pressure does you no good. You want to increase flow across the fin's.

If you run a larger cylinder. And burn more fuel, you will create added friction & added heat. A better fan, is no different than the larger Carburetor theory. The larger Carburetor is increasing the internal Flow, there by, increasing the cooling internally. The increased flow of a HP Fan & shrouding, help's on the outside. Unlike a larger Carburetor. A bigger fan takes more work to turn. So it is not a free ride. That is why, bigger is not really the object here. You tune the amount of fan, for your needs.

Post Re: Air Cooling / Modification / STR-8 Fan
The problem is that it takes more work to move more air across the cylinder, and I was shocked at how much.

My engine doesn't get too hot, so I decided against using my STR-8 fan.

You should feel the difference an inner rotor makes, if you think the fan makes a difference.

Hm. Well, I was warned to be wary of the the small stator/flywheel I was looking at due to quality issues, so I'm going to pass.

However, I may have my flywheel lightened one of these days. Inner rotors are too expensive for me.

U could just mount a electric fan on the fan cover and then have it on a switch to the ignition so when you turn your ignition on and fan comes on and then u will gain power and cooling efficiency
