Post Timing chain, cam sprocket, and cam
I had to remove the cam sprocket and timing chain in order to replace a broken rocker arm. Now, though I've replaced the chain and lined up the timing marks on the flywheel and the cam sprocket, the cam doesn't seem to be in the correct position for a compression stroke at TDC. Both intake and exhaust rocker arms should be lifted off the valves (both valves closed), right? I couldn't see any place where the cam sprocket aligns with the camshaft but there must be such a thing. How do you get the camshaft in the correct position relative to the cam sprocket?

the sprocket has a tab that goes into the camshaft to hold it in place and prevent if from spinning. if this tab is flattened out or broken off, u need a new cam sprocket.

in the photo u need to line up C and D , the sprocket has markings and the head has a triangle pointer. all this should be 9 o-clock position (motor flat horizontal to the ground)

Thanks, Race Concept! That was it. The tab was broken off. I don't want to tear the engine all apart to retrieve the broken piece so I'll hope it's fallen down where it won't do any harm.
