Post How-To do a Quality Plug-Chop!
Can someone please explain how to do a plug chop. I'm talking about detailed instructions and explanations here.

Should one do slow speed plug chops first and then work up to high speed plug chops? There should really be a clarification on this process to prevent burnt up cylinders and pistons.

Only thing worse than a dead Zuma, is No Zuma.

Dead = blown piston/cylinder

Plug Chop and How do I do it?

Plug Chops are what you do to tell which rpm range is rich or lean if you don't have an Oxygen or Gas sensor.

* Basically you run the bike under load, (some do it at a certain rev range e.g. idle, 2000-3500, 3500-4500 etc) however...
* It is MUCH BETTER to make marks on your Kill Switch casing at 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, Full (WFO) and put a pin in your throttle rubber so you can calibrate the throttle position, NOT the rev range)
1. Then hit the kill switch, wait for the bike to cool, take out your plugs and "read" them for soot (Rich), Colour, Aluminium Bits (bad).
2. Waiting for them to cool is recommended by most people due to Thermal Temp Diff. around plug threads. So it can be a Long term thing and a Royal PITA. An Idle Plug Chop is easy, because you do it every day, when you turn off your engine.
3. START with NEW Plugs or you'll fool yourself.
4. Hitting the "Kill Switch" is called "chopping" the plugs as you get the colour they are at that range, rather than at idle, which is where you normally turn off your engine (right?).
5. Take out your plugs and check the Colour. Generally a nice "Tan" colour in the rpm range you are testing, is what you are looking for. Lamb Chops are tastier though.
6. See this very good site http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/spkplghnbook.htm for a guide to Reading Plugs and Plugs in general.
7. See the Exhaust Rejetting Spreadsheet for additional performance-related Spark Plug Issues.

For Plug Reads (Colours, Descriptions)

* http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/hdsparkplugs.htm on Spark Plugs and Spark Plug Reading
* http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/spkplghnbook.htm on Reading Spark Plugs, with colours of Plugs This is the good one
* http://www.strappe.com/plugs.html
* http://verrill.com/moto/sellingguide/sparkplugs/plugcolorchart.htm
* Or any Clymer or Haynes Manual also has a Plug Chart.

well ususally people ride their 50 or 70cc on either 3/4 throttle or just full, i usually ride full so the best thing for me to do would be to kill it at wot

Would one need to install a new plug for each chop?

Yes. I did read the post. I posted it.

I meant; do you have to put a new plug for every chop? Meaning is it possible to do a low speed chop, then a mid speed chop, and a final high speed chop using the same plug?

The high speed plug will paint the plug the color of the low speed chop first, mid-speed color next, and finally high speed color. I think you might be able to do this for the slow and mid speed chops because on the third chop, you will essentially be double painting the plug with low speed color, then mid speed color, and the high speed color wont work at all.

It might be possible to do this for the first two speeds. You will then need to change to a new plug to do the high speed chop.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Post Re: How-To do a Quality Plug-Chop!
normally i just do wot chops

if you run your scooter at 1/4 throttle and its lean and then its rich at 1/2 it might look right on in stead of rich
if there is the slightest bit of color left on the plug it can make it hard to tell if it went from rich to lean

the best bet is to use a new plug for every chop i have never seen any one reuse a plug for chops
i plugs i have used for tuning and put them in at a later date

So the consensus is:(?)

1. Go buy a sack of plugs (about 5 or 6 of em. BR9HS, BR8HS for 70cc kits)

2. See post number 3

Post Re: How-To do a Quality Plug-Chop!
How long do you have after starting it up to get it to WOT before it gets painted by the Idol speed color? (Fine tuning this post)

How long do you have after starting it up to get it to Mid Throttle position after starting it up?

Does this mean that I will have to warm the scooter up on one plug and then conduct plug chops with another plug? Wouldn't that be dangerous; removing a plug from a hot motor?

Details, Details, Details.

i change my plugs hot just make sure you dont touch anything thats hot with your bare hands

what i do is i just run it a few minutes (till choke or enrichment circuit is off)on the old plug change plugs quick (i wear gloves)
start her back up scoot to the end of the drive way and go right to the point i want to use normally wot or 3/4
and the problem with the bug eye is we dont have a choke we have an enrichment circuit so cold weather tuning can be a pain

There you have it folks.

1. Warm it up on the old plug.
2. Quickly swap the old plug with a new plug (be sure and have it gapped already)
3. Start it up and slam on the gas down the street (or parking lot) and then kill the motor
4. Quickly slow down and stop.
5. Pull that plug out and see what is going on there.

Repeat this procedure using a new plug for mid range, and low range plug chops to be extra safe. The jetting system works by throttle position; so should your plug chops.

Post Re: How-To do a Quality Plug-Chop!
I had this 2-Stroke Plug Chop how-to in my "library":

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Get new spark plug(s), but don't put them in yet.
2. Warm up motor to operating temp on old plugs.
3. Install new plugs.
4. Accellerate through all gears to top gear with throttle pinned.
5. When you hit the top of the top gear, hit the kill switch and
pull in the clutch.
6. Remove the spark plug(s) and ride home on the old plug(s).
7. Hold the new plug in a vise and use a hacksaw to cut the threads
away from the center electrode.
8. You should see a brown 2mm "smoke ring" at the base of the
white center electrode if the main jets are dialed in perfect.
9. if the smoke ring is darker than chocolate brown or taller
than 2mm, you're rich on the mains, but if it revs clean to full
throttle, you can leave it there and be on the rich side.
10. If the smoke ring is smaller than 2mm or lighter than chocolate
brown, you're lean on the mains, go up a size and try again.
