Post New member just bought 08 zuma 32k miles and bogging issue
Hey so I’m a new member here. I’ve owned a zuma in the past but just bought one today. I’ve realized that occasionally when Going once I hit about 20 mph it bogs out but then picks back up and gets up to full speed. I replaced the spark plug today and plan to do oil tomorrow. I noticed it does not have any air filter on it and the carb area looks extremely dirty.

Does this seem like it’s running lean or rich with an aftermarket pipe and no air filter? What mods would you recommend I go with first? Air filter? Thanks in advance!

Order and install Air filter asap before riding again
If you have no air filter and a aftermarket pipe you are probably running really lean and your bike sounds zingy.
Is this a stock carb and air box ?
What is your Top speed ? Low 40's mid 40's or high 40's
08's with throttle mods and pipe mid 40's on up is the start of a decent tune .
While waiting for Air Filter .
Take out carburetor clean rebuild if neccessary and do the Throttle mod that the 08 needs assuming stock carb .
Check the main jet see what number you have 80 is what the stock carb runs .
If you are running a pipe and stock carb you need to be at a higher jet typically .
Yamaha dealers can get a 82 84 main jet for stock carb .
If you have a different carb see if the cleaning the carb and filter clean up the bog .
After you have reinstalled air filter and carb do some plug chops wide open to check the main and then plug chop at 1/2 throttle and idle to make sure you are running rich enough in all areas .
Dialing in the carb after cleaning with apipe should show a dramatic improvement
After the dialing in the carbs with that many miles cvt rollers and belt should be next on list to be inspected and replace worn rollers or belt if needed.

Thanks for the reply! I haven't taken it apart yet to see the carb up close. Is there an air filter you recommend?

I was looking at this carb kit that comes with 17.5mm Carb with Auto Choke Air Filter and Throttle Cable and since I have an aftermarket exhaust already then id go with an 85 or 90.

Stay far away from the seller. Good sellers are far and few between these days for scooter parts
Over built dozens of Zuma with just a pipe 99 percent of the time all you need to do is adjust the needle
If it has an 80 main jet you will be a tad rich in stock form on the high rpms
After market pod filters do 1 thing only with a non race kit is make noise and make it harder to tune
The stock air box flows enough for the stock 90 cc motors it flwill was more then enough for even a mild street kit just put an air filter in the air box

oem airfilter through you local yamaha dealer part number 4VP-E4451-00-00 is about 8 bucks
The stock carb works well and is sometime all that is needed .
oem jets if needed are about 6 bucks a piece.

Yeah I believe it was a dirty carb. I ended up purchasing a 17.5mm polini, uni air filter, and 70cc BBK. Next is going to be upgraded Variator and rollers. Scoot has been running great!
